Saturday morning a deputy was on patrol on Van Giesen near the West Richland city limits. He noticed an older man walking along the highway collecting aluminum cans. He was carrying two large plastic bags, one of which was almost full. The deputy stopped to ask him if he needed a ride home. The man, Charles Hoffarth, said he was not done collecting cans to make money to buy Christmas gifts. He also shared his story about losing his mother recently.
A Richland firefighter stopped and told the deputy he knows Charles and Charles regularly walks to collect aluminum cans. With funds donated for the purpose of helping those in our community, the deputy provided Charles with money gift cards so he can take a break this weekend from collecting cans and have the money he needs for Christmas. The Richland firefighter generously gave Charles a ride home and said he and his firefighters will check on Charles on Christmas Day.
